Building Inclusive Democracies in ASEAN has won the 2016 Outstanding Book Award by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). This award is given annually by the NAST Philippines to recognize outstanding books and/or monographs published by Filipino publishers. NAST will present the award on July 14, 2016 at the Manila Hotel, One Rizal Park, Manila.
Edited by Dr. Ronald U. Mendoza, Dr. Edsel L. Beja, Jr., Dr. Julio C. Teehankee, Dr. Antonio G.M. La Viña, and Dr. Maria Fe Villamejor-Mendoza, this book is the result of a seminal cross-institutional collaboration among researchers from the AIM Rizalino S. Navarro Policy Center for Competitiveness of the Asian Institute of Management, the Ateneo School of Government of Ateneo de Manila University, the College of Liberal Arts of De La Salle University, and the National College of Public Administration and Governance of the University of the Philippines Diliman. The book contains the latest research and insights of academics and development practitioners pursuing political and economic reforms in the Asian region. It features studies on the impact of malfunctioning democratic systems and weak institutions, as well as reflections on reform efforts along the lines of citizens’ participation, transparency, evidence-based policymaking, and the institutions that underpin all these in day-to-day political and economic life.
As AIM Chairman Emeritus Washington Z. SyCip noted, “democracies in ASEAN are unique. They are shaped by the historical, political, social, and economic dynamics peculiar to a country. This book explores these factors with empirical data that underpin how inclusive growth and development can transform such democracies. As I have always said, democracy will work only where people can read and write and are no longer hungry.”
The Institute welcomes this prestigious award with much pride.
Building Inclusive Democracies in ASEAN is published by Anvil Publishing, Inc. It is available at all National Bookstore and Powerbooks branches.
